The mowing deck or deck shell is the central piece for lawn mowing. It can come in several widths: 76 cm (30 inches), 82 cm (32 inches), 92 cm (36 inches), 96 cm (38 inches), 102 cm (40 inches) or 107 cm (42 inches). Some go down to 66 cm for small rear-engine tractors and can go up to 122 cm for twin-cylinder engine tractors. These decks are designed to work either with side discharge (opening on the deck side), rear discharge (with or without collection bag) or mulching (cut grass stays in the deck and is redeposited on the ground in small pieces). You will also choose your blades according to the desired work; a high-lift blade will be preferred over a mulching blade when mowing with collection.
