Some advice to ensure that setting your LE DETAUPEUR firecracker goes smoothly.

First, you need to unblock the tunnel by leveling the mound of earth. If you discover the chimney, you just have to set the trap. If the hole is blocked, it is generally visible and accessible using the Détaupeur's point. If not, search for it, always using the point or your finger. 

To ideally prepare the hole, the less you modify it, the more effective the installation will be. Avoid enlarging or crushing the hole as the mole would need to push the earth towards the surface and would therefore receive a less intense explosion. However, the hole must be well open, otherwise the mole will go to block the hole. 

To locate the ideal molehill, look for ventilation tunnels characterized by a very small mound of earth, barely larger than the diameter of the tunnel, which collapses as soon as you pass the Détaupeur's point through it. 

Some special cases:

Surface tunnel: In loose soil, for example a recently seeded garden or lawn, the mole digs its tunnels near the surface. It makes few or no molehills, but its path resembles a long object under a carpet. To trap it, cut into the tunnel, slip in the firecracker, crush the tunnel and cover it with a little soil. When the mole raises the earth to pass, it will trigger the explosion.

Very short chimney: If the 2 tunnels meet very close to the surface, you must choose one of the tunnels to lower a firecracker into, so you have a 50/50 chance that the mole will escape. To remedy this, connect 2 firecrackers, one in each tunnel.

Multiple tunnels: If there are more than 2 tunnels coming from the chimney and it's deep enough, proceed as usual or change to a different molehill.

Firecracker explosion outside the hole: This case occurs very rarely but it gives the mole a reprieve. To eliminate the pest, take a new firecracker, repeat the procedure by pushing the firecracker slightly into the ground.
